Nude portraits are not about our physical desires – they are all about art. They may be rather bold or provoking or sexual, yet they provoke thoughts rather than carnal excitement and raise emotions much subtler than plain loathing. This is all theory though – to hell with it, it’s high time to see how it is done in practice!

- It is important to feel the border between artistry and profanity: as a photographer, you need to pursue the former, not the latter. Accentuate the natural curves of model’s body, nuances of texture, light and shadow – great nude portraits emerge out of these visual trifles. Displaying too intimate details should be avoided – people usually feel uncomfortable when staring at someone’s genitals. Rely on your artistic taste to decide what will look great and what should be avoided – it is a more reliable criterion than strict rules of glamour photography;
- Unless you’re shooting a naked pirate, don’t succumb to the temptation of dressing up your model in pricely tokens: nude photography is about a human body, not jewelry and fancy trinkets. - Refrain from using hot lights during a nude photo session, unless you want to turn it into some kind of a desert. It’s always better to use cold lights – they are more economizing, they don’t make everyone in a studio sweat and they are very powerful tools to make a great photo. In order to acquire more subtle light, use soft-boxes. In fact, softer lighting always contributes to the atmosphere of your nude portraits, so don’t disregard with this opportunity;
- Always mind the proportions: depending on the angle from which you shoot, your models body can become too stretched or too short. Don’t you think it wouldn’t actually demonstrate your good taste?
- Be creative. Experimenting with poses, light and surroundings can result in very unexpected and original variations;
- Take as many shots as possible, will you? Really, the more you shoot – the more good pictures you will have to pick later. Even hardcore glamour photographers make some several thousand pictures in one studio session – so they could later pick really astounding images;
- Try to reach mutual understanding with the person you shoot. She is more than merely a model, but your best friend and a co-author.
