If your photos turn out bland, no matter how hard you try, you may be missing one critical detail that could make your photos a lot better. For instance, when taking a photo of a person, never have that person looking directly at the camera. Instruct them to turn their head at a slight angle so it appears they are looking to the right or left of the lens. Also, in the frame (viewfinder) never have the person perfectly centered.
