Brides Can Save Money By Shopping Smart

by Judith Turner

Ask any bride-to-be what one of her biggest concerns is and she will probably tell you sticking to a budget. Just about every bride and groom is looking for deals to help them save money on their wedding.

With the cost of living constantly going up brides and grooms have so many reasons to want to save money. Even with two incomes it costs so much to support a family today. Even before the wedding most couples are thinking about buying a new home and starting a family. If there are children from previous marriages then their will be additional expenses when merging two families.

Fortunately, couples can save money on their wedding in many ways. Something that has gained popularity over the years is shopping on internet auctions such as eBay. Anyone familiar with eBay knows that you can find just about anything you are looking for. From wedding favors to wedding gowns, shopping on eBay has become very popular. One man did quite well when he sold his wife’s wedding dress after his divorce. His listing brought a lot of attention with a picture of the man actually wearing the gown! This funny listing not only got him a good price but several marriage proposals!

When shopping on auction sites keep in mind that other brides are doing the same thing. Sometimes you can get lucky and be the only bidder of a certain item. However, if their is a lot of interest in one particular auction (such as a one-of-a-kind item) then the bidding price can go higher than your budget allows. Just remember that you are trying to save money so don’t bid higher than what you are comfortable with.

One of the biggest challenges of buying something online is not being able see the item up close or, in the case of clothing trying it on. Before bidding make sure that you read the description thoroughly and ask the seller questions about anything you aren’t sure about. It is also wise to check a seller’s ratings and avoid auctions where the seller has a large percentage of negative feedback. If you do get an item that you aren’t happy with many sellers will work with you because they want you to be a satisfied customer. This is often the case if there is a flaw in the item that was not mentioned in the description. If their is nothing wrong with the item but it just isn’t what you expected then you may not be able to return it. All is not lost though because you could always sell it yourself and perhaps make even more than what you paid for it!

Another way to save is by shopping at consignment shops. These stores have been around for years with many specializing in wedding gowns. Check locally or online for consignment shops near you.

Consignment shops do lack the variety of bridal shops. If you find the gown of your dreams at a bridal shop you can simply order the size that you need. With consignment shops you wont be so lucky. You may find a beautiful gown but if it is isn’t the right size then you will probably have to keep looking unless it can be altered. Many consignment shops wont have anyone available for alterations so try and find a good seamstress before you start shopping and have one less thing to worry about.

Another challenge with consignment shopping is that you need to act quickly. You may find the gown of your dreams only to come back the next day to find it has been bought by another bride. Bring your mother, sister or friend shopping if you want a second opinion. Understand that the minute the gown leaves your hands, it is gone. Another bride can come in and buy it right out from under you. In a bridal store, they can always order another copy of the dress. This is not so in a consignment store.

But shopping at eBay or at a consignment store can have huge benefits. Your dress can be less than 50% of what you would pay otherwise. If you are willing to be a bit flexible about what type of dress you wear, you’ll have plenty of options. This can be a great way for a bride to save money for her wedding.
